Let’s get this out of the way early: people are not searching less, but behavior is changing.

Zero-click searches rose from 60.45% of U.S. Google searches in 2024 to 68.01% in early 2026, according to SparkToro. People get their answers in other ways: AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT, Claude, advertising.

And that makes this post fun. We’re mixing things up a bit from previous years. Some of these predictions are where the industry already agrees. A few are our own bolder calls. And as for the rest? Who doesn’t love a nice hot take?

But before we really get going here? Every prediction comes with what to actually do about it in your 2027 plan.

    Sounds good? Let’s dive in.

    Jared's 2027 Predictions

    1. AI Answers Become the Default Response

Remember when the AI Overview was the shiny new thing at the top of the page? In 2027, it’s the main event.

AI-generated answers are moving away from a “shiny object” to the first thing searchers see. Traditional search results (remember links?) are still there, but it’s becoming the second stop.

Similarweb estimates AI Overviews now appear on 43% of U.S. searches, up from roughly 15% in early 2025.

And Google’s AI isn’t just limited to the search bar. Google says AI Mode has passed one billion monthly active users globally.

Looking further out (I know, I know – it’s not 2027, but hang in there), Duane Forrester, Founder and CEO of UnboundAnswers.com, forecasts that the ranked results page stops being Google’s default first response for most U.S. queries between 2028 and 2030. So you can see where this is going.

The good news? Rankings are still the entry ticket, because AI answers pull heavily from pages that already rank. The new goal is being the source the answer quotes.

What This Means for Your 2027 Plan

    • Check which of your highest-value queries already trigger AI answers (and yes, we do have a report for that)
    • Make key pages easy to quote: clear definitions, direct answers near the top, and specific facts and numbers. AI-generated responses love this format.

    2. Clicks Keep Falling, Even When Demand Doesn't

Yes, we’ve talked about zero-click before (and even within this post). But 2027 is the year the gap between demand and clicks gets impossible to ignore.

People are searching as much as ever – but fewer people are ending up on a website.

Informational keywords are hit the hardest. People get the information they’re looking for quickly without ever having to leave the SERP. Commercial and transactional do hold up better, but don’t be surprised if this changes in 2027 (more on that later).

And measuring all of this is getting harder. GA4 added a native AI Assistant channel in May 2026, but traffic from AI apps can still come through without a referrer and lands in Direct.

    Rethink the Scoreboard

Our AI Brand visibility report has several key measurements to it (with a strategy, of course):

    • Exposure: AI visibility, mentions, citations, impressions
    • Selection: default pick rate, positioning, sentiment

And it’s critical that you tie these components directly to business outcome (think prospect pipeline, revenue, enrollment, etc.).

The main takeaway? Lower traffic paired with steady (or rising) pipeline can be a perfectly healthy result.

    3. Ads Move (and Stay) Inside the Answer

Where users go, ads follow. And in 2027, users are inside the AI answer.

Why does this matter? Google has always been great at monetizing its platform. And since click activity is down, it’s not hard to connect the dots that ads will stay where users’ eyeballs are.

What to Do Before You Add Budget

    • Audit where your ads already appear in AI placements.
    • Check which match types and campaign types make you eligible.
    • In a regulated industry (think healthcare or finance)? Get compliance sign-off early. You don’t want legal seeing an AI-generated ad placement for the first time after launch.

    4. Paid Search Automation Goes From Normal to Mandatory

For years, automation in Google Ads was something you opted into. Now Google is retiring the manual options. Here’s the timeline:

Wait, What is AI Max and Demand Gen?

AI Max and Demand Gen are two of Google’s latest updates in its Advertising platform.

    • AI Max: targeting and creative features that utilize AI to optimize ads in real time. Think AI-driven ad copy, landing page selection, etc.
    • Demand Gen: creative and asset-based AI ad campaigns that aim to “capture engagement and action” across the Google universe (YouTube, Discover, Gmail, etc.).

    Where Advertisers Still Have Control

Control still exists. It just moved from campaign settings to your inputs:

    • Conversion data quality
    • Creative assets and landing pages
    • Brand exclusions and negative keywords
    • Budget guardrails

The advertisers who win in 2027 will be the ones who know how to properly “feed the machine” – or even take back full control.

    5. AI Agents Will Research for Buyers, But Won't Close the Deal

A little bit of a bolder take: AI agents will build the shortlist. Humans will still sign in 2027.

Most of the industry conversation is about agents completing purchases and closing deals. But this is where I’ll deviate from the crowd a bit. In 2027, AI agents will not close the deal.

But let’s dig into that a bit more.

A G2 survey of 1,076 B2B software decision makers (March 2026) found that 51% now start their research in an AI chatbot more often than in Google. Comparing vendor strengths and weaknesses was the top use case. And 69% chose a different vendor than they originally planned based on chatbot guidance.

Sure, there are ways it’s being forced on purchasers for smaller transactions. Google even announced a new open standard for agentic commerce. So for smaller purchases? Sure, AI can probably handle that.

But purchases with multiple decision-makers, procurement, specs, and contracts? Totally different story. There, the agent’s job is the shortlist. And if the agent can’t find these details (specs, proof, value propositions), you’ll never make the shortlist.

    How to Win the Shortlist

    • Make product and service information easy to extract and compare: specifications, use cases, certifications, case results, and comparison content.
    • Make sure AI crawlers can actually reach your site. Check your CDN and bot settings, since these can block crawlers without anyone noticing.

    6. Video and Communities Become Major Citation Sources

For anyone who has been paying attention, AI answers lean heavily on what other people say about you. And more and more, on what they say on video.

    • Goodie AI analyzed1 million citations across 10 AI platforms from August to mid-December 2025. YouTube’s share of social citations jumped from 18.9% to 39.2% in this period, while other visual platforms like Instagram and TikTok started to emerge from a zero percent citation rate.
    • AirOps found that brands featured in AI search platforms were 6.5x more likely to have their mentions come from third-party content than by brand-owned content.

Reddit was a big part of last year’s predictions. In 2027, video content (YouTube, TikTok, Instagram) steps up to the plate. And that can be a big deal – especially if you’ve never invested in video.

Show Up Where AI Is Listening

    • Build a YouTube presence around the questions your buyers actually ask, with transcripts and chapters.
    • Participate (for real) in relevant communities and forums.
    • Invest in digital PR that earns mentions on trusted industry sites.

    7. Your Customer List Becomes Your Most Valuable Marketing Tool

Our bold take: in 2027, a clean customer list becomes a search marketing asset.

Why? Ad targeting inside AI platforms is being built on first-party data.

    • ChatGPT ads can target users by email address, phone number, and mobile advertising ID. OpenAI’s documentation says inclusion audiences need at least 25,000 matched users.
    • Google’s AI Mode ads test is aimed at users who connect apps like Gmail and Google Photos through Personal Intelligence.
    • Google’s Customer Match already runs on consented, first-party customer lists, with files as small as 100 records.

It’s worth noting that the 25,000-user minimum rules out a lot of B2B companies. But any brand that makes a concerted effort to grow, segment, and maintain consented lists will have access that smaller (or messier) lists won’t.

Get Your List Ready for 2027

    1. Audit your CRM data quality.
    2. Confirm consent for every contact you plan to use.
    3. Deduplicate and segment your contact lists.
    4. Connect offline conversions.
    5. Decide who owns the list across marketing and sales.

    8. AI Visibility Snapshots Become Obsolete

Our bold take: a one-time “are we cited?” check is an anecdote. In 2027, credible AI visibility reporting will require repeated runs, multiple platforms, and trends over time.

Why? AI answers change from one run to the next. A Growth Memo analysis found 91% of citations appear in only one of ChatGPT, Perplexity, or AI Overviews.

Our own data yields similar results. Our system, TRACEy (we’ll get to this in a second), collects prompt results across platforms and mentions can vary drastically. One such report (for an undisclosed client) showed a 79% mention rate on one platform, and a 54% mention rate on another. Another? 75% mention rate in one environment, 29% in another.

So that screenshot showing your brand cited in ChatGPT? That’s only a snapshot in time. Run the same prompt tomorrow and you might get a completely different answer. Run the same prompt in a different platform, and you may not see yourself at all.

    Introducing TRACEy

TRACEy is FourFront’s solution to outdated snapshots. TRACEy (which stands for “Tracking Responses Across Conversational Engines” with an added “y”) collects prompts across several platforms, frequencies, and even locations (where possible).

With this, we’re able to collect reliable metrics, identify trends, and find threats and opportunities in our clients’ AI visibility strategies.

Interested in a TRACEy demo? Let’s talk.

What a Trustworthy AI Visibility Report Like TRACEy Should Look Like

    • Each prompt is run many times, not once.
    • Results are reported as a frequency or range (for example, “cited in 12 of 20 runs”) instead of a yes or no.
    • Multiple AI platforms are tracked separately.
    • Trends are shown over weeks and months, not as a single snapshot.
    • The report states which numbers are observed and which are modeled.

    9. "Contact Us for Pricing" Sinks Marketing Strategies

Hot take: in 2027, “Contact us for pricing” will cost you more deals than it starts.

Let’s go back to our conversations about AI agents and their role in the buying process. Buyers and decision makers are going to ask AI tools to compare vendors. We’ve established that.

But vendors with no pricing information will be the first ones left out. Hidden pricing used to start a sales conversation. But in 2027, hidden pricing will leave you out of the conversation entirely.

To be clear, there isn’t any direct evidence here. But the buyer behavior is hard to ignore. That same G2 survey we cited earlier found that comparing vendors was the top reason for using AI chatbots in their research.

If an AI tool is building a comparison and you’ve given it nothing to compare, who do you think makes the shortlist?

Options Short of Publishing a Price List

We get it. Many B2B and industrial companies can’t publish fixed prices, and custom quotes are custom for a reason. But there’s plenty of middle ground:

    • Starting-at pricing
    • Typical price ranges
    • The factors that drive cost
    • Sample project scopes
    • An FAQ that explains how your pricing works

    10. ChatGPT Ads Are 2027's Most Overhyped Line Item

Hot take: ChatGPT ads will get more budget and attention in 2027 than they should.

This isn’t to say ChatGPT advertising isn’t worth pursuing or testing because it absolutely is. But keep your expectations (and your budgets) in check.

ChatGPT is still new in the Ads space. ChatGPT ad testing began in the U.S. on February 9, 2026. OpenAI expanded ChatGPT ads to be more advertiser-friendly in May 2026.

OpenAI announced in August that less than 200 days after launching, ChatGPT Ads had tens of thousands of advertisers with availability expanding globally.

So the hype is there. But the results? The jury is still out.

A study from FirstPageSage shows projected conversion rate across industries varies wildly. In certain verticals, conversion rate can be as high as 6.3%, while others convert at less than a quarter of a percent.

It’s also worth noting: there are many verticals – like Financial Services, Health Services, Housing, etc. – that are still limited (and in some cases, entirely excluded) from ChatGPT Ads.

How to Test Without Getting Burned

    • Run a bounded 60 to 90 day pilot with a set budget.
    • Track conversions with your own tools.
    • Agree on a kill point before you launch.
    • Don’t pull budget from proven channels to fund it.

    Frequently Asked Questions

Is SEO still worth investing in for 2027?

Yes. AI answers pull heavily from pages that already rank well, so strong SEO is still the entry ticket. What changes is how success is measured: visibility and influence alongside clicks.

    Track three layers together:

    1. exposure (AI visibility and impressions)
    2. behavior (branded search and direct visits)
    3. outcomes (leads and revenue).

When the layers move differently, that tells you where to look.

Test it if your audience is there, but treat it as a bounded pilot with independent measurement. Don’t move budget from channels that are already proven.

Not necessarily. Price ranges, starting-at pricing, and clear explanations of what drives cost give AI tools and buyers enough to compare you.

At least quarterly, using repeated runs across multiple platforms at each checkpoint. A single check shows one moment, and AI answers change from run to run.
